He was 29 years old at the time of his death, leaving behind a grieving family and community.
Born on August 20, 1996, in Nacogdoches, Texas, Garrick spent his life rooted in Sabine County and Rosevine, where he built his home and family. A graduate of Hemphill High School, he carried small-town values throughout his life — strong work ethic, loyalty, and deep commitment to those he cared about.
Garrick was a dedicated husband to his wife, Candice Newell, whom he married in 2023, and a loving father to his daughters, Dallee Newell and Hadley Jones. His family was his greatest joy, and he was known for the deep love and unwavering devotion he showed them every day.
Professionally, Garrick was respected as a general foreman supervisor with PMC, where he worked on refinery shutdowns and was known for his commitment to safety, leadership, and diligence. Those who worked alongside him admired his professionalism and reliability, as well as the integrity he brought to his work.
Garrick also leaves behind his brother, Drew Merchant, and extended family members who remember him fondly for his warmth, sense of humor, and the steady support he offered to loved ones. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gary Dean Newell and Karen Amanda Wilson Newell, as well as other cherished relatives.
Visitation was held on February 12, 2026, at Starr Funeral Home in Hemphill, Texas, followed by a funeral service and burial on February 13th at Wise Cemetery. Family, friends, and community members gathered to honor Garrick’s life and legacy.
